2020-2021 Opening Plan

The following guide has been prepared as a resource for staff, students, and the families of Sussex Montessori School (SMS) as we navigate the 2020-2021 school year during the presence of COVID-19 in our communities. The details provided are consistent with the public health guidance for minimal to moderate spread (green and yellow).

This guide has been completed using information to the best of Sussex Montessori School’s knowledge in combination with the recommendations made by the Governor of Delaware, Delaware Department of Education and our Secretary of Education. As we continue to learn about this complex virus, and receive guidance from our revered medical community, this guide may require updating. Please review this site frequently.

We will always strive to keep you informed, keep the lines of communication open, provide support where we can, and above all, keep our students, their families and our staff safe. Your health and well-being are our top priority as we work diligently to deliver an exceptional Montessori education to our students.

We understand that this is an unusual time; and that there are many circumstances guiding your individual decisions.  We hope that this guide will support your decision-making process as you chose either a hybrid plan or fully remote learning option for your child.

Technology for Remote Learning

Some remote learning will be accessed online. Sussex Montessori will work with families to determine what computer and access needs they may have. As needed, devices may be available for loan. All families accepting a computer on loan must agree to the Acceptable Use Policy. A draft of this policy is available below and will be discussed and voted on at the August 18th board of directors meeting. After the policy is finalized it will be distributed to the necessary families.

Transportation Contract

In an effort to further limit social interaction during this time, families who choose the hybrid learning plan are encouraged to provide personal transportation to and from school. If a family is unable to provide transportation they may register for bus transportation. All families needing bus transportation during the duration of the hybrid learning plan must complete a Transportation Contract. Please complete this contract and return to the school via email or mail as soon as possible. Our bus contractor will be implementing additional health and safety measures for as long as deemed necessary by Delaware’s public health experts. These include mandatory masks from pick-up to drop-off, socially distanced assigned seats and extra cleaning protocols after each route is completed. Children from the same household may sit together on the bus.
